Founded in February 2021, the School of Advanced Manufacturing (SAM) of Sun Yat-sen University assumes a pivotal role in the Emerging Engineering Education layout of the university’s Shenzhen campus. Firmly keeping its foothold in the national construction of intelligent manufacturing system, the SAM caters to the demands of “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” for high-level technological professionals in advanced manufacturing technology and industrial development, fully displays Shenzhen’s innovative cluster advantage in the industry of high-end equipment manufacturing, and focuses on developing “Ultra-precise Machining”, “Additive Manufacturing”, “Intelligent Manufacturing” and “Future Manufacturing”. The SAM is fully committed to boosting the independent innovation capability and overall strength in the manufacturing domain, cultivating top-notch talents, and serving as a scientific and intellectual basis for the rapid development of national and regional advanced manufacturing industry and the strategy of building China into a manufacturing power.

Residing in research areas including “Advanced Manufacturing Science and Technology”, “High-end Equipment Manufacturing Technology”, “Intelligent Robot Systems and Technology”, the SAM has attained a series of systematic scientific and technological achievements with unique technical advantages, by means of basic theoretical innovation, cutting-edge technology innovation, and equipment system innovation. Oriented to the developmental demands of the Greater Bay Area for the high-end equipment manufacturing industry, the SAM exploits to the utmost the advantages of interdisciplinary integration and forms a discipline system composed of basic disciplines, emerging disciplines, and supporting disciplines, which cover mechanical manufacturing and automation, mechatronics engineering, mechanical design theory, etc.
Concentrating its effort on building the first-level discipline of mechanical engineering, the SAM has set up the mechanical engineering major for undergraduates and devotes itself to cultivating top-notch innovative talents equipped with diversified knowledge structure, ability to solve problems regarding the design and development, science and research, and production and management of complicated mechanical systems, and competence in leading the future development of mechanical engineering and related domains.
